Top performer of the day.

Tom Price (109 & 4/38)

Batting at No 9, Price smashed a 98-ball 109 against Worcestershire to bail Gloucestershire out from a precarious position of 45 for 7 to 231 on the opening day. He then returned to bat four wickets and down the hosts to 118 for 7 at stumps. He was ably supported by Ajeet Dale, who added 22 at No 11 and then picked three wickets on the 17-wicket day at New Road ground.

Best Batting performances

Tom Abell (119*) and James Rew (114*) stroked unbeaten centuries as Somerset ended Day 1 on 311 for 4. Put in to bat, Somerset were in trouble early, losing their top three with only 24 on the board. The duo stitched a 221-run unbeaten stand that took the contest away from the visitors.

Centuries by Nick Gubbins (125) and James Vince (104*) powered Hampshire to 287 for 4 on the opening day against Northamptonshire. The 198-run alliance between Vince and Gubbins helped the visitors to a strong position.

Half-centuries by Michael Jones (69), Scott Borthwick (59), Ollie Robinson (73) and Brydon Carse (53 not out) powered Durham to 382 for 6 on the opening day against Glamorgan, who elected to field. After a 117-run stand between Jones and Borthwick, Glamorgan picked a few wickets at regular intervals to have the visitors reduced to 239 for 5, but towards the latter half of the day allowed that momentum also to slip away.

Ben Duckett cracked an unbeaten 119 as Nottinghamshire posted 252 for 5 on the rain-affected opening day at the Lord’s, against Middlesex. Put in to bat, Haseeb Hameed and Duckett stitched a 117-run opening stand before the former was dismissed on 55 by Ethan Bamber. That dismissal triggered a brief collapse and the visitors were soon reduced to 152 for 4. However, Duckett revived the innings in the company of Lydon Jones, adding 73 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was dismissed.
