After losing their top three early, Rahul presented a case for himself ahead of the start of the Test series against England as he scored a brilliant century. After Rahul peeled off an entertaining century and Ravindra Jadeja scored a scintillating 75, the former retired. The Indians ended Day 1 at 306/9 with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj being the two unbeaten batsmen.
